Yale-New Haven Hospital
Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH), 20 York St., is a nationally recognized, 1,541-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale Schools of Medicine and Nursing. YNHH was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the United States in 1826. Today YNHH includes two inpatient campuses in New Haven, as well as a Children’s Hospital, a Psychiatric Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital. YNHH has a combined medical staff of about 4,500 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties. In FY 2013, YNHH cared for 80,503 inpatients and handled more than 1.1 million outpatient encounters. YNHH is the flagship hospital of the Yale New Haven Health System, an integrated delivery system that includes Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, and their affiliated organizations.
The 208-bed Children's Hospital provides comprehensive most inpatient and outpatient pediatric services, and also includes a rooftop helipad, high-risk maternity unit and newborn units, labor, delivery and postpartum services.
Smilow Cancer Hospital is a 14-story, 500,000-square-foot cancer facility that includes 168 private inpatient rooms, outpatient multidisciplinary treatment centers, 12 operating rooms, infusion suites, diagnostic imaging services, a floor for children with cancer, a specialized women’s cancer center, and diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services for children and adults.
The Psychiatric Hospital is the primary clinical site of adult and adolescent psychiatric services provided by YNHH. The 75-bed inpatient facility, specializes in the rapid assessment and treatment of acute and severe psychiatric symptoms.
Connecticut Mental Health Center
Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), founded in 1966, is one of the oldest community mental health centers in the United States. An enduring collaboration between the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services and the Yale University Department of Psychiatry, CMHC provides recovery-oriented mental health services for 5,000 people in the Greater New Haven area each year. It is also a center for scientific advancement in the understanding and treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders. CMHC is a major training site for psychiatrists and psychologists from the Yale Department of Psychiatry and welcomes trainees from a variety of other disciplines including nursing, social work, and chaplaincy. VA Connecticut Healthcare System - West Haven
VA Connecticut Healthcare System's West Haven campusat 950 Campbell Ave. is a tertiary-care facility that offers a full range of medical, surgical and psychiatric services to veterans. VA Connecticut Healthcare System was formed in March 1995 by the integration of the two U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals in Connecticut, at West Haven and Newington. The West Haven campus is located approximately four miles from its affiliate, Yale University School of Medicine. Specialized national programs in epilepsy, stroke, rehabilitation for the blind, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, schizophrenia and virology make this VA facility a leader in the system. Its clinics are responsible for more than 200,000 visits annually, and it also operates primary care centers for veterans at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London and at Stamford Hospital. Its medical research program is the second largest in the VA system. VA Connecticut's West Haven campus is the site of Connecticut's only Positron Emission Tomography Center, a joint project with Yale University School of Medicine.
The John B. Pierce Laboratory
The John B. Pierce Laboratory, 290 Congress Ave., a not-for-profit research institution affiliated with Yale, was founded in 1932. The Pierce Laboratory is devoted to the study of how the environment influences the health, comfort and well-being of humans. The scientists, who hold joint appointments at the medical school, focus their efforts in three broad but interrelated areas: the description and assessment of environmental stimuli, such as nicotine, ozone and other air contaminants; the role of the senses in helping to determine our perception of the environment; and the effects of environmental exposure to physical and chemical stimuli on basic biological processes. The Pierce Laboratory provides research and training opportunities to undergraduate, graduate and medical students.
