Faculty, staff and patients visiting Yale Medical Group (YMG) practices may find that New Haven’s Downtown Crossing project affects their regular route to the medical campus.

The Downtown Crossing project will reclaim 10 acres of land currently used as highway, reconnect the Hill neighborhood with downtown, and encourage business, retail and housing development. The first development of Downtown Crossing will be the construction of 100 College Street on the parcel of land east of College Street near the Air Rights Garage.

During Phase 1 of the project, the city of New Haven will be closing Exit 3 off the Route 34 Connector this month to prepare to turn the connector into a broad boulevard. Preparation work includes installing signs and a protective barrier that will shield areas outside of construction from debris. Exit 3 will close permanently and Exit 2 will close in June.

Employees should add time to their commutes while the two-year construction proceeds. By the fall of 2015, most of the major work should be complete and new improved traffic patterns will begin.

Staff registering patients for appointments should provide them with the following recommendations: Ongoing major construction along New Haven’s Route 34 Connector is causing changes in traffic patterns that may impact anyone visiting Yale Medical Group ambulatory practices at the Yale Physician’s Building, Temple Medical Center, or Yale-New Haven or Smilow Cancer hospitals. Even if a patient’s regular route into New Haven is not changing, they may run into delays, so it’s important to allow for extra travel time.

If you work at a medical campus location, alternate directions below may help you get to your location faster. Printable versions of these directions and a map can be found on the Yale Medical Group website. Commuting resources are available at the university’s Transportation Options website.
