Yale Practice March 2012

Peter Schulam will lead the newly formed Department of Urology

The new department chair and Yale-New Haven Hospital chief of urology is a native of New Haven who left a prestigious position at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center to come to Yale for a chance he said doesn't come up often in one's career.

Leffell Prize 1

Ronald Salem honored with the Leffell prize for clinical excellence

Dr. Salem, section chief of surgical oncology, said accepting the annual award at a reception attended by his peers was “like being at the Oscars, where you are surrounded by giants.” A special committee chose him from among 20 nominees, and his name will be displayed on a plaque in the Sterling Hall of Medicine.

Epic Update: Three new users assess the electronic medical record

Approximately two dozen Yale Medical Group practices have gone live with the Epic EMR since October. Each of these practices underwent extensive preparations. While change may not be easy—and people’s experiences with it vary—some practices are beginning to see the results Epic promises. Three users shared their stories.

Physician at Work: Working rapidly to treat strokes

Joseph Schindler, MD, and his Acute Stroke Team colleagues see about 1,000 stroke patients a year, and they have a short time frame in which to administer treatment. Dr. Schindler treats patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital and at remote locations through a telestroke network that he expects will help more patients as it expands.
