Biography

  • Practice locations: York Street Campus (Long Warf Drive in New Haven, and Norwalk)
  • Residency: University of California, San Francisco
  • Fellowship: University of California, San Francisco (pediatric urology)
  • Clinical interests: Traditional and minimally invasive approaches to pediatric urologic surgery, utilizing laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic-assisted techniques. Special clinical interests include: obstruction of the ureteral pelvic junction, vesicoureteral reflux, reconstructive surgery for congenital problems such as hypospadias, ambiguous genitalia, disorders of sexual development, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Adam B. Hittelman, MD, PhD, is a fellowship trained Pediatric Urologist who cares for pediatric and adolescent patients with problems in the urogenital system. Dr. Hittelman’s clinical interests include reconstructive surgeries, focusing on children born with congenital anomalies such as hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, kidney stones, hypospadias, and disorders of sexual development. He offers traditional and minimally invasive approaches to urologic surgery, utilizing laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic-assisted techniques.

Attention is placed on the patient and family. Many congenital urologic problems require long-term follow up and Dr. Hittelman emphasizes the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. This relationship and care is often established prenatally as many conditions are identified in utero. As some children can have other associated medical conditions, Dr. Hittelman works with other pediatric specialists in multi-disciplinary clinics, improving the family’s access and continuity of care for these complex conditions.

Dr. Hittelman earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Following residency he completed a pediatric urology fellowship at UCSF, renowned for its multidisciplinary pediatric urology training and research program in conjunction with Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

Dr. Hittelman earned his PhD in molecular and cellular biology through the New York University, School of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program. He continued his research studies during residency, working at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research has focused on molecular mechanisms of urologic malignancies and genitourinary development. ? He is also interested in developing delivery systems to enhance therapeutic treatment of neuropathic and overactive bladder conditions. He has presented his work at regional, national and international meetings. He has authored numerous research and clinical papers, with a main emphasis on pediatric urologic conditions. Dr. Hittelman is focused on resident and medical student education, serving as the assistant residency director in the Department of Urology. He is an active member of the American Urologic Association, Society of Pediatric Urology and Society of Fetal Urology.
