LuAnn Wilkerson, Ed.D., began her work in faculty development in 1972 with the Clinic to Improve University Teaching at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, while completing her doctorate in education. Since 1980, she has assisted hundreds of faculty members in the study and improvement of medical education in a variety of settings with a special interest in ambulatory teaching and problem-based learning. From 1984 to 1992, Dr. Wilkerson served as the Director of Faculty Development at Harvard Medical School where she contributed to the design, implementation, and evaluation of the New Pathway curriculum, including development of a teaching portfolio for the promotion of clinician-educators.
Dr. Wilkerson is currently responsible for oversight of the full range of medical student curricular activities, including curricular revision, faculty development, and program evaluation. She serves as Director of the Center for Educational Development and Research, Chair of the Faculty Fellowship in Medical Education, and oversees the Instructional Design and Technology Unit in the School of Medicine. Her current research projects include studies in cultural competency, geriatric education, clinical skills assessment, and curricular outcomes with current funding from the NIH to develop and evaluate a curriculum for cancer survivorship. In 2005, Dr. Wilkerson was awarded the Merrill Flair Award by the Association for American Medical Colleges for major contributions and leadership over time in the field of medical education. In 2006, she received the Daniel C. Tosteson Award for Leadership in Medical Education from the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School for her long-standing contributions as a teacher and scholar.
