Head and Neck Brachytherapy Program

Director: Yung Son, MD

The Yale head and neck cancer program offers a variety of cutting edge treatment programs and specialized modalities. One of these specialized therapeutic choices is brachytherapy. This radiation modality incorporates the use of radioactive sources that are placed within or in close proximity to the tumor/area at risk. The brachytherapy program provides a variety of treatment methods that include permanent interstitial seed placement, temporary low and high dose rate methods, and customized brachytherapy treatment devices. The Yale head and neck radiotherapy tumor service is equipped to provide treatment options such as intra-operative low-dose rate brachytherapy and high-dose rate ‘after loading’ Gamma-Med therapy. Treatment programs are individually designed for each patient as appropriate. Dr. Son also provides intra-operative consultation to the Yale head and neck surgical staff.
