Many women seek improvement in their breast size and shape, especially after pregnancy, weight changes, and aging. Breast enhancement can significantly improve the way a woman feels about her body image and self confidence. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals, describe different options that may be available to you, and offer recommendations for treatment.
Sometimes breast augmentation, or an implant alone, is sufficient to achieve the desired changes in a woman’s breasts. Many improvements have been made to breast implants over the years. Breast implants do not increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Silicone and saline breast implants are equally safe. Silicone implants today are made of a cohesive gel filling, and therefore do not extravasate into the surrounding tissues if there is a break in the implant shell. All implants have a risk of rupture of 1% per year. Younger patients who choose breast augmentation should understand that the implants are not permanent, and may need to be replaced during her lifetime.
Some women have adequate breast volume, but desire a more youthful or lifted appearance of their breasts. A mastopexy procedure rearranges the existing skin and tissues to give the breasts a better contour and higher position on the chest.
In some cases, an augmentation mastopexy is needed to improve contour as well as increase breast size. These procedures are sometimes performed as two separate operations or combined in a single surgery.
Our surgeons also perform an innovative procedure using fat grafts to improve breast shape and volume. Using traditional liposuction techniques, fat is taken from the belly and/or thighs, processed in the operating room using state-of-the-art methods, and then injected into the existing breast tissue. Depending on the degree of transformation desired, external devices may be required to optimize the surgical results.
