Faculty Research

Yale Medicine

Dr. David Yuh is board-certified in thoracic surgery. He performs mostly adult cardiac surgical operations. As the founding Director of the Minimally-Invasive Cardiac Surgical Program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Yuh performed the first robot-assisted cardiac operation at that institution in 2003 and developed a robust minimally invasive mitral repair practice during his ten years in Baltimore. He specializes in minimally invasive approaches toward valve repair and replacement and surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation. These operations are performed using much smaller incisions than are possible with traditional approaches. Compared to standard open-chest cardiac surgery, these minimally invasive techniques involve less pain, fewer wound complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery time for patients, particularly the elderly. Dr. Yuh is continuing to explore different ways of performing cardiac operations in a minimally invasive fashion.

Dr. Yuh earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Stanford University and completed his general and cardiothoracic surgical residencies at the Stanford University Medical Center before taking his first academic faculty position at Hopkins. Dr. Yuh’s research interests lie in improving surgical robotic technology and developing computational models of the heart with advanced imaging techniques to improve preoperative surgical planning of complex reconstructive cardiac operations. Dr. Yuh has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation to fund this research. He is a permanent member of an NIH study section and has recently been selected to serve on the Circulatory Systems Advisory Panel at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Yuh has written numerous research publications about heart and lung transplantation and surgical robotics, and has served as the lead editor of two textbooks in adult and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Yuh is an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, serving on committees and chairing scientific sessions for both societies, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American College of Cardiology. He also serves as an editorial reviewer for The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Annals of Surgery, and Circulation.
