During the weekend of June 1-3, 372 alumni, spanning the years 1947 to 2008, shared meals at Marigolds, local restaurants, and classmates’ homes as they returned for their class reunions. Tours led by Richard Silverman, director of admissions, and students took alumni into the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, histology labs in the Anlyan Center, and the Cushing Center in the Medical/Historical Library. A panel of alumni discussed their at times unusual career paths and, on Saturday morning, two leaders in neurogenetics discussed their research into the genetic underpinnings of disorders of the brain. Richard Belitsky, M.D., deputy dean for education and Harold W. Jockers Associate Professor of Medical Education, and associate professor of psychiatry, described planning for the new curriculum, while Michael Schwartz, Ph.D., associate dean for education, described how the medical school is using iPads. Alumni also toured HAVEN, a free clinic organized by students in New Haven’s Fair Haven neighborhood. Dean Robert J. Alpern, M.D., Ensign Professor of Medicine, brought alumni up to date on the state of the school, and faculty and alumni recalled Howard Spiro, M.D., at a service in his memory.
