BiographyAfter completing a combined clinical and research fellowship in infectious diseases at YSM under the mentorship of Drs. Phylis Bodel and Elisha Atkins, Rick began an internal medicine group in Guilford, CT. While pursing its primary mission of providing broad-based continuous care for adults in the Shoreline community, the group also served as an educational site for YSM students and internal medicine residents. In 1993 Rick founded the Primary Care Clerkship for which he recruited a new practice-based faculty, developed a small group workshop curriculum, and served as director through 2009. He also originated and continues to direct the Standardized Patient Program for which he trains actors, writes scripts, and has collaborated in the development of novel curricula for 5 clerkships and several in- house clinical skills assessments. In November 2011 he was appointed Associate Director for Learning Technologies in the new Teaching and Learning Center where he serves as a school-wide resource for identifying and implementing innovative technologies for teaching and learning. Rick maintains a close association with the student run Free Clinic as an attending physician and past Medical Student Adviser. He is serves on the steering committees for the Preclinical Clerkship and the Clinical Skills Assessments in years 2 and 4, and teaches an experiential workshop on problem focused patient examination in the Ambulatory Clerkship. He has published and maintains a number of websites that support his academic activities. His professional interests include curriculum design and development, formative assessment, motivational interviewing, practice-based and small group teaching, primary care, and standardized patients.
