Research Summary

Nicotine is the main addictive substance in cigarettes. Researchers have yet to conclude whether nicotine has cognitive enhancing properties. My research is focused on investigating whether human genetics can help clarify whether nicotine can improve cognitive performance in both smokers and non-smokers. To answer this question, I bring smokers and non-smokers into our laboratory, collect their DNA, administer intravenous nicotine, and have them perform cognitive tasks while under the influence of nicotine. The goal of this research is to better understand individualized motivations for smoking as well as creating a pharmacogenetic model for cognitive enhancement.
