With the aging of our population, geriatric psychiatry has emerged as an increasingly important subspecialty, with a unique set of challenges requiring specific expertise. The Division of Aging and Geriatric Psychiatry was formed in 2007 to provide a center of focus for research and education related to this subspecialty at Yale. Researchers and educators in this division study healthy aging and age-related mental disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, mild cognitive impairment, and geriatric depression. Division researchers also have extensive collaborations within and outside of Yale in the study of neurodegeneration, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, genetics, and pharmacotherapeutics.

The Division features a highly successful Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowsihp Training Program under the director of Paul Kirwin, M.D.

The Division is also home to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Unit, which focuses on treatment, neuroimaging and genetic studies of Alzheimer's disease and healthy aging.
