Reena Kapoor MD

Assistant Professor of Psychiatry; Associate Program Director, Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship

Biographical Info

Dr. Kapoor is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Law & Psychiatry Division, where her clinical work and scholarship focus on the intersection between serious mental illness and the criminal justice system. She has expertise in correctional psychiatry, community treatment of persons with criminal justice involvement, and management of problematic sexual behaviors. In addition, she serves as Associate Program Director for the Yale forensic psychiatry fellowship, where she performs and teaches about forensic evaluations in the areas of violence risk assessment, correctional mental health, sex offenders, insanity defenses, competence to stand trial, and trauma/PTSD. Dr. Kapoor has lectured widely on forensic psychiatry and holds leadership positions in several professional organizations. She serves as Connecticut's representative to the American Psychiatric Association Assembly, has co-founded the Community Forensics committee of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and is Program Chair for the 24th Annual Conference of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy. In 2014-2015, she is also President-Elect of two professional organizations: the Connecticut Psychiatric Society and the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy. Prior to joining the Law & Psychiatry faculty, Dr. Kapoor completed her residency training in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a forensic psychiatry fellowship at Yale. She is a 2003 graduate Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
