Biography

Thomas Fernandez, MD, was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Yale Child Study Center and Department of Psychiatry in July 2013. Tom is a child psychiatrist, psychiatric geneticist and a graduate of the Solnit Integrated Residency Program in 2011. Tom's research efforts include the following investigations into developmental neuropsychiatric disorders: (1) discovering genetic mutations in Tourette syndrome, motor stereotypies, and obsessive-compulsive disorder using next generation DNA sequencing (whole genome and exome), and using these discoveries to identify treatment targets; (2) discovering epigenetic markers; and (3) clinical trials of new medications. Tom is the recent recipient of a NIMH K08 Career Development Award to study Tourette syndrome and a Simons Foundation grant to study motor stereotypies. Tom’s research program has been one of those benefited by the generous gift from The Allison Family Foundation to support the Psychiatry Research Scholars Program in Child Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry. Tom also works clinically as a child psychiatrist in ongoing clinical trials for children with Tourette syndrome and as an attending in the Tourette/OCD Clinic.
