Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) groundbreaking ceremony.
09/21/2011: This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), an enduring and historic partnership between the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and Yale University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry.
The Department is also celebrating the release of Inside Public Psychiatry, by Selby Jacobs, MD, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, which tells the story of public psychiatry with examples from the author’s experience as director of CMHC.
Founded in 1966, CMHC is one of the first community mental health centers of its kind in the country. It serves over 5,000 men and women every year, all of whom are poor with little or no income or insurance. The center has an exceptional tradition of supporting individuals living with serious mental illnesses such as psychosis, depression, anxiety, and those with addictions or co-occurring mental health and addiction problems.
CMHC is also home to the Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities, laboratories that have furthered our understanding and the treatment of mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction. Due in large part to the integration of comprehensive research alongside an active clinical program, CMHC has emerged as one of the world's great clinical, training, and research institutions in psychiatry.
