On Friday, March 15th, twenty-three residency applicants learned they will be continuing their training in psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.
This year, the Yale Department of Psychiatry matched an expanded first-year class of sixteen instead of its typical twelve. Also, for the first time, second-year residents were recruited through the match.
In addition, two residents will join the Albert J. Solnit Integrated Residency in Child and Adult Psychiatry and Research Training, a joint venture of the department and the Yale Child Study Center.
These new trainees represent a broad diversity of backgrounds and interests. Women and underrepresented minorities make up more than half of the incoming first-year residents, and seven hold advanced degrees.
Yale School of Medicine continues to produce a larger proportion of graduates who pursue training in psychiatry as compared with the national average. Nearly 6 percent of Yale medical students matched into psychiatry, while 4.2 percent of graduating medical students in the United States will join training programs in this specialty.
