  • MacMillan Center: This is the most comprehensive list of lectures, events and workshops at Yale. It is mind-blowing the number of events that takes place at Yale in one week.

Yearly Events

  • Festival of Arts and Ideas: Now entering its fourteenth year, the Festival is firmly established as one of the world's most significant arts festivals. It has the distinction of fusing arts and ideas programs to present a broad array of offerings within and across genres. The Festival showcases hundreds of international events each summer, from over 75 countries, with an impressive scale and scope unmatched in the Northeast.
  • Concerts on the Green: During the summer a series of concerts are held on the New Haven Green in Downtown New Haven. In 2006 there were three concerts on the green and included performances by Kenny Rogers, Kassie DePaiva, Boyz II Men, Warren Wolf Quartet, The Temptations and Doug Wamle Quartet. These concerts are free of charge.
  • New Haven Jazz Festival: In the summer the city opens itself up for jazz which is now in its 25th year.
  • Pilot Pen Tennis: Each year the city serves as one of the stops on the US Open Series at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale University
  • Areyto Latino Festival: This is the largest Latino festival in New England, it is so large that in 2005 the festival drew 120,000 people to the city. The festival includes performances and activities all of which take place on the New Haven Green.

Museums

  • Yale Center for British Art at 1080 Chapel Street: The center is home to the biggest and most extensive collection of British Art outside of the United Kingdom
  • Peabody Museum Of Natural History at 170 Whitney Avenue: Has everything from Egyptian mummies to saber toothed cats. Under the museum's roof are more then 11 million specimens and objects
  • Yale University Art Gallery at 1111 Chapel St houses tons of amazing pieces of art in several different buildings on campus. The collections included renowned early Italian paintings, African sculptures and modern art. The museum is also the oldest college art museum in the country.
  • Connecticut Children's Museum at 22 Wall Street: Great place for kids and their families and teachers. Lots of hands on exhibits including a pint sized post office, a construction site and a green room from the book "Goodnight Moon"
  • Over the past eleven years, City-Wide Open Studios (CWOS) has drawn thousands of visitors to explore New Haven's neighborhoods while discovering artists, galleries, and the treasures of our city. .

Favorite Nightlife & Restaurants

New Haven has an active nightlife thanks to the fact that there are a number of great bars, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs as well as the number of young professionals and college students who frequent the city. Here are some of our resident’s favorites:

  • Toad's Place at 300 York Street - Open since 1975 Toad's Place has made itself one of the premier music halls in the nation
  • Alchemy Nightclub: Three different clubs come together under one roof. Has CT's biggest dance floor.
  • Firehouse 12 Fall Jazz Series
  • Sports Haven at 600 Long Wharf Drive - Home to the Shark Bar which has a 2800 gallon aquarium filled with tropical fish and exotic sharks. There are also tons of TVs to watch the tracks all across the nation and billiards to play
  • Bar at 254 Crown Street: Try their famous mashed potatoes pizza.
  • 116 Crown: A hip place to hang out.
  • Modern Apizza: One of the best pizza places in the Northeast.
  • Thali: Zagat rated it #1 Indian restaurant in CT.

Favorite Outdoor Things To Do

There are tons of outdoor activities in the greater New Haven area. Here are some of resident’s favorites:

  • Yale Outdoor Education Center: Beautiful kayaking / canoeing at the center which has a pristine, large lake that is accessible only to Yale faculty/students/staff; free kayaking/canoeing and $6 admission fee
  • Spending time on the Outer Island: Outer Island is a public island in the Long Island Sound (one of the Thimble Islands). It is stunning. Free and all you have to do is take a quick $10 ferry ride to get there.
  • Hammonasset Beach: a popular public beach located in Madison
  • Hiking up Sleeping Giant: Two miles of mountaintop resembling a large man lying in repose, the "sleeping giant”.
  • Bishops Orchard: apple picking in the fall, raspberries in the spring, and blueberries in the summer.
  • White Water Kayaking on the Farmington River
  • Sailing at the Yale Yacht Club
  • Yale Golf Course
