Rotations & Responsibilities

PL-1 Year
Inpatient Service, Yale-New Haven Hospital20 Weeks

Includes care of both medical and surgical subspecialty patients with responsibility for both.

  • 4-8 weeks - Short Stay unit
  • 4-8 weeks - Medicine/Cardiac unit
  • 4-8 weeks - Hem-Onc unit.

Supervision by full-time pediatric faculty.

On call: Night team.

Community Hospitals8 Weeks

Includes inpatient and outpatient experience. Supervision by board-certified pediatric faculty.

On call: One week of nights per block.

Well Baby Nursery2 Weeks

Immediate postnatal care of healthy newborns.

On call: At home call.

Newborn Special Care Unit, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 weeks

Includes four weeks of care of moderately ill and convalescent newborns as well as delivery room experience. Supervision by full-time pediatric faculty.

On call: Two weekends of overnight call.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital6 weeks

Includes responsibility for the care of children with critical illnesses as well as postoperative cardiac and neurosurgical patients. Direct supervision by full-time pediatric faculty.

On call: No overnight call.

Ambulatory Pediatrics, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital6 weeks

Includes integrated experience with urgent walk-in clinic and general pediatrics. Supervision by full-time pediatric faculty.

On call: 1 week Bridgeport cross cover: Night team.

Emergency Medicine, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 weeks

Includes broad exposure to busy pediatric emergency department.

On call: Ten hour shifts

Continuity Clinic at Primary Care Center, YNH Children's Hospital1/2 day per week, 4 weeks

Developmental Rotation: Places emphasis on children with special health care needs, advocacy, and utilization of community resources.

On call: Variable Bridgeport cross-cover

PL-2 Year
Inpatient Service, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital20 Weeks

Includes supervision of three PL-1 residents and responsibility for teaching medical and PA students.

On call: 1 week of nights and 3 weeks of day coverage per block.

Community Hospitals6-8 Weeks

Includes inpatient and 2 weeks of NICU experience. Supervision of PL-1 residents.

On call: One week of nights per 4 week block.

Newborn Special Care Unit, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 Weeks

Direct patient care. Experience with acutely ill newborns.

On Call: Every fourth night for 4 weeks.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 weeks

Includes direct patient care.

On call: Every fourth night for 4 weeks with anouther senior resident.

Ambulatory Pediatrics, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4-8 weeks

Includes well baby care, urgent care clinic.

Call-free overnight

Emergency Medicine, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 weeks

Includes broad exposure to busy pediatric emergency department.

On call: Ten hour shifts, divided between daytime and nighttime shifts.

Electives, Yale New-Haven Children's Hospital8 weeks

Two subspecialty electives. Responsibilities for both inpatient and ambulatory aspects of specialties. Work directly under the supervision of pediatric subspecialists.

On call: 4 weeks variable call; 4 weeks call free.

Adolescent Pediatrics4 weeks
Moderate Sedation2 weeks

Includes formal training and certification by the Department of Anesthesiology to perform sedation.

On call: Call free overnight.

PL-3 Year
Inpatient Service, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital16 Weeks

Includes supervision of three PL-1 residents and responsibility for teaching medical and PA students.

On call: 1 week of nights and 3 weeks of day coverage per block.

Ambulatory Pediatrics, Community Hospital8 Weeks

Includes well baby care, urgents care and well child care clinic.

On call: At home call.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital4 weeks

Includes supervisory responsibilities and direct patient care.

On call: Every fourth night for 4 weeks.

Includes broad exposure to busy pediatric emergency department.

On call: Ten hour shifts, divided between daytime and nighttime shifts.

Electives, Yale New-Haven Children's Hospital20 weeks

Five electives blocks with either subspecialty services or community offices, with opportunities to participate in independent research or international health electives.

On call: 16 weeks variable call; 4 weeks call free.

Pediatric Advocacy Rotation, Hospital of St. Raphael0-4 weeks

PL-3 resident has the opportunity to develop a community advocacy project based at a site in New Haven. The resident will perform site visits at various community organizations throughout New Haven to better understand what services are available to patients in our community.
