Clinician Scholar Track
Eligibility in this track requires “excellence as clinicians, teachers and scholars”. Listed below are examples of the types of activities that could qualify a faculty member for promotion. These guidelines should not be considered an inclusive catalog, or a checklist that will ensure promotion.
Associate Professor
Excel in patient care
Active in patient care - at least 20% of time in clinical activities Highly regarded as clinician - as evidenced by:
- peer review by faculty
- input from community physicians
- input from physicians in other departments
- outside letters at time of review
Excel in teaching
Respected as a teacher - as evidenced by evaluations from:
- medical students
- housestaff & fellows
- peers (faculty to obtain evaluations from lectures, courses, seminars)
- Active and willing participant in teaching activities of Department
- Supervised and mentored theses and research of medical students, residents and fellows
Emerging national reputation for outstanding scholarship
Publications
- Consistent, ongoing record of high quality original papers in leading journals in the field Publications should be hypothesis testing or epidemiologic in nature as opposed to experiential or descriptive.
- Must have a substantive role in the papers (if not first or last author, role should be documented in annotated bibliography).
- Productivity should be of the order of 1-3 papers a year and consistent with the expectation of funding agencies.
- The quality and the impact factor of the journals and the impact of the papers will be considered.
- There should be a well-defined focus of investigation and evidence of emerging independence as an investigator.
- Review articles should be invited reviews in leading journals or invited chapters in major texts.
Funding
- Should be PI on a grant or grants from national organizations.
- There should be significant salary support on the grants. The proportion of salary that is grant supported may vary from section to section and will be determined by the section chief and chair.
- Grant funding should support the lab supplies, technical help, data gathering and other costs of the research.
- Funding should extend through the first 2 years of the proposed appointment.
Speaking Invitations
These should be invited presentations at national or regional meetings or Major presentations at non Yale-affiliated hospitals, or other medical schools.
Professor
Must be national or international leaders in their fields. Candidates must have attained the same level of achievement in their domains as candidates for professor in the other faculty tracks.
Excellence in patient care
- Sustained excellence in patient care - at least 20% of time in clinical activities
- Highly regarded as clinician as evidenced by:
- peer review by faculty
- input from community physicians
- input from physicians in other departments
- outside letters at time of review
Excellence in teaching - Mentoring
Respected as exemplary teacher - as evidenced by evaluations from:
- medical students
- housestaff and fellows
- peers (faculty to obtain evaluations from lectures, courses, seminars)
- Active and willing participant in teaching activities of Department Record of attracting and training academically successful postdoctoral fellows and/or junior faculty
- awards to trainees
- sponsor of trainee research grants
- publications by trainees
- director of training grant
“Outstanding nationally or internationally recognized scholarship which has substantially advanced the field”
Publications
- Sustained record of high quality original papers in leading journals Identifiable papers that have substantially advanced the field
- Acknowledged as leader of research team
- The quality and the impact factor of the papers will be considered
- Publication of chapters in highly regarded textbooks
Funding

Evidence of National & International Recognition
- Invited presentations at national or international meetings
- Editorial board of journals
- Member of national specialty board
- Officer/member of council of subspecialty organization
- Permanent or ad hoc member of NIH study section or other national review panel (e.g. VA, MOD, AHA)
