Pediatric Transport Service
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Pediatric Emergency Department at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital provide a transport service to children who require an increased level of care not readily available at outlying medical facilities. Due to their specialized equipment and training, the Pediatric Transport Team is able to extend Yale-New Haven’s Pediatric ICU expertise to the critically ill or injured child during transport.
Yale-New Haven Hospital has teamed up with American Medical Response (AMR) to develop the Yale-New Haven Hospital Transport Program. AMR has provided an ambulance dedicated to the safe and efficient delivery of distressed children from other regional institutions to Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
The transport service also strives to maintain the highest standard of care. The program maintains rigorous standards for transport personnel and also requires certification in BLS and PALS. Currently, teams are composed of advanced trained physicians, APRNs, highly trained lead transport registered nurses, pediatric trained paramedics, registered nurses trained in pediatric intensive care and respiratory therapists. All teams are in continuous contact with an in-house board certified Pediatric ICU attending functioning as medical control. When the team is deployed contact is made with the referring institution to provide reassurance and advice prior to the team’s arrival. The Pediatric Transport Team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has the goal of providing both children and their families with the highest quality of care while en route to Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
