Biography

Dr. Alexander Vortmeyer graduated from Hamburg University Medical School in 1987. From 1988 to 1994, he was trained in academic and clinical pathology and neuropathology at the Departments of Neuropathology and Experimental Brain Research, Hamburg, the Department of Pathology, Hamburg, and at the Brigham and Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Boston. From 1994 to 1999, he completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology and a Molecular Pathology Fellowship at the Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda. At the same time, he performed pioneering studies using tissue microdissection and genetic analysis with Drs. Liotta and Zhuang.

In 1999, Dr. Vortmeyer was appointed Acting Director of Neuropathology at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). At NINDS, he further developed and promoted tissue-based research in collaboration with numerous basic and clinical laboratories within NINDS, NCI, and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

In 2008, Dr. Vortmeyer joined the Yale Department of Pathology as Director of the Neuroapathology Program. He is interested in principles of earliest tumorigenesis and the application of new technologies in studies on neoplastic and degenerative neurologic disease.
