Dr. Theodore Blaine joined the Yale Orthopedics staff in2011 after practicing for eight years with Columbia Orthopaedics – New YorkPresbyterian Hospital in New York, and four years with University Orthopedicsat Brown University. He bringsspecialized experience in minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and elbow,and has pioneered several new medical and surgical techniques including injectablemedications for shoulder arthritis, minimally invasive shoulder replacement andarthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Healso lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on both traditionaland Reverse Shoulder Replacement, a new procedure for patients with shoulder arthritisand non-repairable rotator cuff tears. Dr. Blaine’s clinical interests and experience include arthroscopic andreconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, orthopaedic trauma, sportsmedicine and athletic injuries, and orthopaedic research.
Dr. Blaine is currently Associate Professor of OrthopaedicSurgery at Yale Medical School and Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Yale NewHaven Hospital. Hisprofessional training includes fellowships in shoulder and sports medicine atColumbia Presbyterian Medical Center, elbow surgery at the Mayo Clinic, andmusculoskeletal research at the University of Rochester. He is an active member of multipleselective and prestigious orthopaedic societies, including the AmericanOrthopaedic Association, the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, the AmericanSociety for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has been recognized as one of the“Best Doctors in America,” an award given to only the top 5% of all physicians.
Dr. Blaine is board certified by the American Academy ofOrthopaedic Surgeons with additional subspecialty accreditation by the AmericanSociety of Sports Medicine. Aformer competitive swimmer (Avon Old Farms School ‘84) and collegiate lacrosseplayer (Princeton University ‘88), Dr. Blaine enjoys treating all athleticinjuries in patients of all ages. He has significant expertise in treating shoulder and elbow instability,labral tears, and tendonitis of the shoulder and elbow (impingement syndromeand tennis elbow). He has beenteam physician at the collegiate and professional level including soccer, football,hockey, lacrosse, and baseball.
Dr. Blaine has authored and edited over 100 papers andtextbook chapters in orthopaedic surgery, published two textbooks on minimallyinvasive shoulder and elbow surgery, and serves on the faculty of severalcourses sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a world renowned reputation andtreats many national and international patients. His primary practice is in Southern Connecticut, and he ispleased to serve all patients in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusettsand Rhode Island.
