As a single woman living in Louisiana, making the decision to have a baby on my own was one that I weighed very carefully. There seemed to be a million things to consider, not the least of which were selecting a sperm donor, navigating insurance, and selecting the perfect fertility practice.
When a college friend suggested the Yale Fertility Center in Westport, my initial thought was, "Why fly from Louisiana to Connecticut for fertility treatments?" However, my friend and her husband raved and raved about the practice, and so when I had a conference in Manhattan, I scheduled a consult with Dr. Ryan Martin. And I am so glad I did! The staff is phenomenal in every way-- gentle, reassuring, available, and knowledgeable. They helped make the logistics of sperm donation a smooth one, and worked around my schedule as I flew back and forth for appointments.
I was shocked and delighted to find myself pregnant within four months of my first visit! The practice is wonderful, and I could not be more thankful to the doctors and nurses who helped make this dream possible!
As anyone who has dealt with infertility knows, it's a frustrating process filled with feelings of helplessness and uncertainty. My wife and I had spent 18 months with a local fertility specialist, and had found the experience time-consuming, difficult and discouraging. Although we often had appointments two to three times a week, we rarely saw the doctor, and instead saw an ever-rotating number of nurses, none of whom seemed familiar with our chart.
When we did an initial consult at Yale's Fertility Center in Westport, we immediately knew that this practice was different. At that first visit it was explained to us that either Dr. Ryan Martin or Patricia O'Neill, APRN, would be at all our appointments. (Generally we saw them both!) What makes this practice unique is the time and attention we were given, and the ways in which our treatment was individualized, and very much tailored to us. An action plan was put in place for us on our first day, and as we began IVF we felt very informed about the process, which alleviated much of our anxiety.
We found the entire staff to be compassionate, accessible, and keenly intelligent. We have been thrilled with the care and attention that we have received, and are sad to leave our team here as we transition to an Ob!
Living in Manhattan, my husband and I had been evaluated by one of the city's top specialists. Yet two years into treatment, with no diagnosis of anything "wrong," we were desperate to find an answer to our infertility, and were discouraged and exhausted by month after month of failed fertility treatments.
When we read about the Yale Fertility Center in Westport, we were immediately impressed with the staff's resumé and credentials, and upon our first visit, we knew that the practice was right for us. From the beginning, it was evident that the staff was empathetic, available, and knowledgeable, and that they took a holistic team approach to our care.
What we would learn is that when you become a patient in this practice, you become part of that team-- we were consulted and informed about every part of our treatment plan. We also liked the fact that our doctors and nurses were part of the staff at Yale, a teaching hospital, where there is strong collaboration among peers, and where challenging cases are discussed, and solutions brainstormed.
This would prove key to solving the problem of our infertility. Although I had never had symptoms of endometriosis, Dr. Martin's instincts led to me having laparoscopic surgery, where endometriosis was found and removed. I was pregnant two months later.
We have been awed by the level of care we have received, and feel so lucky to have found this practice!
