In Vitro Fertilization Program

This microscope is used to identify eggs retrieved during IVF.

As the first In Vitro Fertilization Program in the Northeast, the Yale In Vitro Fertilization Program, referred to as Yale IVF, has become a recognized leader in the field of assisted reproductive technology. Yale IVF is associated with one of the finest medical schools and hospitals in the country.

The program started in 1982, and in 1983, the first Yale IVF baby was born to a couple who shared in our role as forerunners in the evolving field of assisted reproductive technology. The program works with infertile couples offering support, information, and counseling as well as the latest technological procedures and advanced treatment. We strive to make the IVF experience as rewarding and positive as possible.

The program also provides the amenities of a private practice while ensuring access to academic expertise and technological breakthroughs. We realize the process of resolving infertility can be difficult, therefore, our program makes every effort to minimize any confusion or frustration couples may be experiencing by thoroughly discussing all procedures and aspects of care.

Our internationally renowned multidisciplinary team of physicians, scientists and specialized staff has dedicated our life's work to improving your chance for completing your family. At the Yale Fertility Center, your dream is ours!

IVF is one of the treatment options for managing infertility wherein developing eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries (during a minor procedure performed under sedation) and are mixed with the male partner’s sperm in the laboratory to create an embryo. The embryo/s are allowed to develop over the next 3 to 5 days in incubators in the laboratory and are then transferred directly into the woman’s uterus. Embryo transfer procedure is very simple and painless. Attachment of the transferred embryo/s to the uterine lining (implantation) follows a few days after embryo transfer. A blood pregnancy test is performed 15 days after egg retrieval to confirm if implantation occurred. Once pregnancy test is positive, the pregnancy is monitored by a combination of blood tests and ultrasound.

IVF is the treatment of choice for couples where the female partner has blocked, severely damaged, or absent fallopian tubes. For those with severe male factor infertility (where the male partner has poor sperm), IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is recommended (a single sperm is injected into a mature egg to facilitate fertilization). IVF should also be considered in couples with a long standing history of infertility, those with unexplained infertility, with severe endometriosis or in couples who have not been able to conceive with other infertility treatments.

Because women have a finite quantity of eggs, reproductive banking (egg/embryo freezing for future use) is gaining popularity and an increasing number of women are seeking IVF treatment for the purpose of postponing reproduction.

Patients seeking to postpone reproduction commonly include

  1. Career or scholastic reasons
  2. Lack of a current partner
  3. Recent diagnosis of cancer
