Discovery to Cure

Discovery to Cure is a new program that combats women’s reproductive cancers with a three-pronged approach, combining early detection, exceptional clinical care, and development of novel treatments.

The direct connection between the laboratory and the clinic is what makes Discovery to Cure truly unique. The laboratory efforts include molecular and cellular research and clinical trials focusing on new treatments and approaches to diagnosis and prevention.

Discover to Cure has current partnerships with more than ten pharmaceutical companies, the National Institutes of Health, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group. This means that patients participating in the program will benefit from state-of-the-art therapy if they have cancer and state-of-the-art diagnostic studies if they are participating in the early detection program.

Early detection

The Yale Early Detection Program Program for Ovarian Cancer seeks to test and put into practice three novel approaches for screening for women's reproductive cancers:

  • Genomics - the study of genes and their function
  • Proteomics - the study of proteins
  • Radiological Imaging - Magnetic Resonance and Ultrasound

Women over thirty who have at least one relative who has experienced ovarian cancer are eligible to participate. Please consult the Early Detection Program webpage for more information.

Clinical care

The clinical program is comprised of physicians, scientists, nurses, genetic counselors, geneticists and ancillary staff committed to providing a comprehensive approach to treating reproductive cancer. Advantages include:

  • The latest surgical interventions and post-operative treatment
  • Risk assessments, including genetic counseling and physical examinations
  • New diagnostic imaging and ultrasound technologies
  • Opportunities for both women with normal physical and ultrasound examinations and women with ovarian cancer to participate in approved studies for developing new treatments

Research

The research agenda within Discovery to Cure focuses on translational scientific research leading to development of:

  • novel therapeutics
  • new targeted therapies
  • identification of disease markers
  • new methods of prevention

Clinical trials are an important part of Discover to Cure’s research efforts. Discovery to Cure’s unique partnership with leading pharmaceutical companies allows Yale to secure trials for the study of new compounds to be used for treatment and new techniques for diagnosis.
