Ayesha B. Alvero, MD, MSc is currently a Research Scientist in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. She received her M.D. in 1996 and M.S. in 2003. She came to Yale in 2001 as a Post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Barry Kacinski in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, where she developed a quantitative assay to measure circulating tumor cells for the prediction of chemoresponse in breast cancer patients. She then joined Dr. Gil Mor’s laboratory in 2003 and focused her work in ovarian cancer. In 2006, Dr. Alvero uncovered the apoptotic regulators of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and generated robust proof-of-concept studies leading to clinical trials for the use of Phenoxodiol as a chemosensitizer in EOC patients. She was promoted to Associate Research Scientist in 2006 and to Research Scientist in 2012 and has continued working with Dr. Mor in the Discovery to Cure Translational Research Laboratory. More recently, Dr. Alvero led the team in Dr. Mor’s lab, which identified and characterized the ovarian cancer stem cells and identified the novel compound NV-128 as a potential inducer of cell death in the cancer stem cells by circumventing apoptosis resistance. NV-128/ME-344 is currently in Phase 1 clinical trial.
