Dr. Flannery's Lab

Research Interests

Dr. Flannery is interested in the effect of insulin resistance and diabetes on endometrial pathology. Insulin resistance is an underlying problem in obesity, the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Women with obesity, PCOS, or Type 2 diabetes mellitus have a higher risk of irregular bleeding, implantation failure, miscarriage, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrial carcinoma. Dr. Flannery’s research aims to determine whether this endometrial dysfunction is a consequence of the metabolic abnormalities occurring in insulin resistance. Using techniques in molecular biology, she examines potential mechanisms for how insulin and glucose affect epithelial cell proliferation and stromal cell decidualization in the endometrium. The Flannery lab studies type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Endometrial cancer and Endometrial factors in early pregnancy loss.
