Discovery to Cure
The innovative program known as Discovery to Cure: Advancing the Prevention, Early Detection & Treatment of Women's Reproductive Cancers was launched in 2003 to provide women with new methods for the prevention, early detection and treatment of gynecologic cancers. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in women in the United States and leading cause of gynecologic cancer death. Although it is only 20 percent as common as breast cancer, its mortality rate is three times as high. It is estimated that one in 57 women will develop ovarian cancer in her lifetime. On average 21,000 new cases are diagnosed annually and 15,000 women die of the disease. This is because with few and vague early symptoms the disease often passes under the medical radar until it has reached later stages of malignancy and therapeutic options become limited.
It is for this reason that the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale University created the comprehensive women's reproductive cancer clinical care and early detection program known as Discovery to Cure to lead the way in developing and providing novel methodologies and treatments of ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. It is the direct connection between the laboratory and the clinic that makes Discovery to Cure truly unique. The laboratory efforts include molecular and cellular research and clinical trials focusing on new treatments and approaches to diagnosis and prevention.
