After the white coat ceremony officially welcomes students to Yale School of Medicine, students begin their studies. While Yale in many ways adheres to the traditional approach to medical education (two years of basic science courses followed by two years of clinical training), its M.D. program – known as the “Yale system” – emphasizes critical thinking in a nongraded, noncompetitive environment. The centerpiece of this approach is a mandatory thesis based on original research.
