Buono receives travel award from American Pain Society

December 10, 2017

Frank D. Buono, PhD, Associate Research Scientist in the Yale Department of Psychiatry and Research Psychologist and Bio-Statistician at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, has been awarded travel support through the American Pain Society (APS) Young Investigator Travel Support Program.

The award is highly competitive, and Buono may apply the grant toward travel to the 2018 APS Scientific Summit, to be held March 4-6, 2018, in Anaheim, Calif.

The meeting theme is "Understanding Pain Mechanisms," and attendees will learn about the science of pain management through plenary lectures, symposia, poster sessions, and exhibits.

Buono works at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven and at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan. He will present his research at the meeting.

His current project involves the evaluation of pain symptoms in people diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), an uncommon, autosomal dominant disease. The disease has a 100 percent penetration for those who are diagnosed with limited treatment options.

The study is the first to evaluate both pain severity and interference in a large sample of individuals with NF1.

Buono and colleagues also evaluated complimentary forms of treatment and a full battery of assessments including medical-based questions, illicit use of substances, and demographics.
