Physician Biography

Dr. Charles Matouk, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, is a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon with expertise in the open and endovascular treatment of vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord. He completed his certification examination in neurosurgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2009. He then completed a 2-year clinical fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery / Interventional Neuroradiology at the University of Toronto under the mentorship of Drs. Karel ter Brugge and Tom Marotta. He has special interest in treating brain aneurysms, vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord, carotid occlusive disease, and acute stroke syndromes. He also has an interest in general neurosurgery.

His research interests complement his clinical expertise in the open / endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disorders, and can broadly be divided along two thematic lines – (1) the molecular biology / genetics of a diseased vascular endothelium in cerebrovascular disorders; and (2) translational application of advanced imaging protocols in risk stratification of neurovascular disease.
