Spine/Neurorehabilitation Clinic
Patients with conditions affecting the spinal cord or spinal roots such as spinal stenosis, multiple sclerosis, traumatic spinal cord injury, or spinal cord degenerative diseases need specialized care that preserves remaining functions and encourages rehabilitation and repair of damaged circuits. Though the etiologies and severity differ, many principles of diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation are shared.
Hospitalized patients with these conditions may be seen by specialists from neurology, neurosurgery, or orthopedics during their surgical and acute medical care. As outpatients, this collaborative approach continues, with patient referrals amongst these services as well as physical and occupational therapy and anesthesia/pain management. Care plans are targeted toward problems with gait, hand function, balance, spasticity, genitourinary problems, pain and sensory loss, and more. Clinical studies are planned for new technologies to both assess and improve exercise rehabilitation for various disorders. Development of an Integrated Spine Center is underway to more cohesively deliver the multidisciplinary coordinated care as well as basic and clinical research efforts required to meet the needs of our spine and neurorehabilitation patients.
