Background

My ongoing research involves characterization of the biological significance of wolbachia infections in both laboratory and field tsetse lines. To date it was not feasible to study tsetse-wolbachia interactions given the lack of tools. However, I have developed a line of aposymbiotic flies enabling me to begin understanding cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) in tsetse. Additionally, using varied tsetse strains trapped from across Africa I am deciphering the infection dynamics of wolbachia at a molecular level to accurately reflect evolutionary and ecological relationships between the host-parasite.
