MYCOBACTERIA AND SEPTIC SHOCK IN THE LITERATURE

  • very few reports in the literature documenting sepsis/septic shock from mycobacteria (7 patients)
  • all were HIV+ with mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • septic shock documented using hemodynamic parameters
  • poor outcome
  • autopsy findings: miliary tuberculosis involving multiple organs
  • MAI infections are frequently associated with bacteremia/septicemia, although septic shock is much more rare
