Background and Research Focus

The TIP Research Group under the direction of Jonathan Puchalski, MD has established a database of all patients undergoing thoracic interventional procedures at Yale-New Haven Hospital. These procedures include diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, pleural procedures including pleurx catheter placement, pleuroscopy and thoracentesis as well as percutanous tracheostomies. The database has enrolled over 700 patients to date. We have also set up a biorepository of pleural fluid specimens for future research projects. Several of our fellows have been involved in this research and presented data at national meetings.

Current Projects

1) Predictors of mortality in patients with pleural effusions
2) Quality of life in patients undergoing pleurx catheter placement versus pleurodesis
3) Safety and tolerability in obese patients undergoing EBUS
4) Use of conscious sedation for advanced bronchoscopic procedures, safety and patient tolerability
5) Biomarkers of fibrosis in pleural fluid
