Autophagosomes form de novo in response to intracellular stressors, encapsulating specific targets or random bits of cytoplasm. How they form, how they recognize stress-related specific cargoes and how they deliver this material to the lysosome are all largely unanswered questions. Our lab combines classic cell biology approaches with in vitro mimics of autophagosomal membranes to explore the mechanisms responsible for this unique membrane biogenesis and trafficking event.
