PGN Neurons Discharge Strongly Following the Block of GABA-A Inhibition

Intracellular recordings from PGN neurons reveal that these cells dramatically increase their action potential discharge following the block of GABA-A receptors. During normal spindle waves, PGN neurons discharge from 2-15 action potentials per burst (A-C). Following the block of GABA-A receptors with bicuculline, PGN neurons discharge upto 60 action potentials per burst (E-G). Block of GABA-B receptors with saclofen results in an abolition of the oscillation, suggesting that these strong burst discharges in PGN neurons activate GABA-B receptors on thalamocortical neurons.
