Comparison of the slow oscillation in vivo and in vitro

Figure 2.  Intracellular recordings in vivo during the slow oscillation reveal the alternation between the "UP" and "DOWN" states of the membrane potential once approximately every 3 seconds. The periodicity is well demonstrated in the autocorrelogram (Part c). Similarly, simultaneous intracellular and extracellular recordings from slices also reveal the slow oscillation, which is synchronized throughout the local network of neurons (d). The "UP" state of the slow oscillation consists of a barrage of PSPs, while there is relative silence during the "DOWN" state (e). Again, the autocorrelogram reveals a marked periodicity of approximately once every 3 seconds.
