Optimal Neural Response in Auditory Cortex Occurs at Intermediate Arousal

The amplitude and reliability of evoked auditory responses are maximal at intermediate levels of arousal. We presented sounds randomly while monitoring arousal (pupil diameter) and then sorted the data by pupil diameter while the animal was still (not walking). At intermediate levels of arousal, the amplitude of the evoked action potential response (minus baseline) was maximal, as was the reliability of the response (trial to trial cross correlation of responses).
