Cortical Neurons Hyperpolarize by Varying Amounts During Contrast Adaptation.

Intracellular recordings from cortical pyramidal cells during presention of a sequence of low, high, low contrast (the high contrast is presented for 60 seconds and only a portion of the trace is shown). Contrast adaptation is associated with large (A), medium (B) or small (C) hyperpolarizations of the membrane potentials.

The sudden increase in activity in the neuron in the movie is the response of the cell to the high contrast grating.
