My research focuses on the impact of second-hand smoke in the biology of asthma. Cigarette smoke is a strong environmental influence with a negative effect in lung function and asthma. A better understanding of the interaction between second-hand smoke and asthma has the potential to modify asthma therapies and support the efforts for environmental control and respiratory health.
- Characterization of a three gene signature in airway macrophages of asthmatic patients exposed to secondhand smoke. This is a FAMRI sponsored project looking to fully characterize the effect of cigarette smoke in the airway macrophage of asthmatics. We hypothesize that the strong environmental influence of secondhand cigarette smoke influences the function of the airway macrophage and has an effect on asthma pathogenesis.
