CT Gently

CT Gently is an Apple iphone application for CT and CBCT scan optimization developed jointly by Dr. Jun Deng and Komatsu Business Service Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan. It is the world’s first mobile tool that can be used to estimate organ doses and associated cancer risk from computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans based on individual anatomy and scan mode. In addition, it can be used to generate optimized settings for personalized low-dose CT and CBCT scans.

With the user’s input of gender, age, weight and corresponding circumference at three anatomic sites (i.e., head, chest and abdomen), CT Gently can generate comparative results both quantitatively and graphically on the organ doses and the associated cancer risks between the reference and the optimized settings for a specific CT or CBCT scan. It is easy to use, provides accurate organ dose information, offers personalized and optimized scan settings for CT and CBCT scans at mGy or mSv dose level, and available in English, Chinese and Japanese.

With the concern of radiation dose and cancer risk in CT scans among the clinicians and the general public, especially to the children, CT Gently may help increase the awareness about the safe and appropriate application of medical imaging in the clinic with improved benefit-to-risk ratio in the long run. Currently, CT Gently is available for free download via Apple app store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ct-gently/id654734773?mt=8.

On Sep 18, 2013, CT Gently is featured in the Institute of Physics (IOP) newsletter - Medicalphysicsweb with an article entitled "CT Gently app offers scan optimization". The article is written by Dr. Tami Freeman, Editor of medicalphysicsweb and can be viewed at http://medicalphysicsweb.org/cws/article/research/54706.
