Cosgrove Lab

Our laboratory is interested in examining the neurochemical and molecular basis of addiction and psychiatric disorders by using novel state-of-the-art positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging technology.

We have been especially interested in imaging changes in the beta2-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors - which are critical for the rewarding aspects of nicotine - during acute and prolonged abstinence in tobacco smokers. We are beginning to uncover key variables in nicotine addiction such as sex, psychiatric status, and genetic makeup that influence these changes between individuals and groups.

Additionally we are examining the cognitive and behavioral correlates of addiction and the relationships with neurochemistry.

We are constantly recruiting for volunteers to participate in our imaging studies. Each study has different requirements for participation and we accept healthy smoker and non-smoker volunteers from the ages of 18-55.
