Physician Biography

Robert L. McNamara, MD, MHS, FAHA, FACC, FASE is an Associate Professor in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale. He received his medical degree from Washington University, before training in internal medicine and clinical cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and completing his fellowship in echocardiography at Johns Hopkins Hospital and earning a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. He was on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins in both the Schools for Public Health and Medicine for two years. He then worked with the United States Indian Health Service for three years on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona. He has been on the faculty of Yale School of Medicine for the past twelve years. He is a clinical cardiologist with a expertise in echocardiography. At Yale, he was director of echocardiography from 2003-2012 and director of the cardiovascular fellowship training program from 2008-2010. Broadly, his research interests have concentrated on assessing and promoting evidence-based medicine, first in atrial fibrillation and then in acute coronary syndromes. He has been actively involved in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, including serving on the steering committee of ACTION Registry-GWTG and the International Strategy Work Group among other committees and initiatives. He is on the International Consortium for Healthcare Outcomes (ICHOM), Coronary Artery Disease Working Group. He is a clinical consultant for the American Heart Association’s new initiative, the ASPIRE-Alliance, to create a new research collaborative of hospital and ambulatory clinic partners under a single platform. Finally, in 2013, he worked in Rwanda for three months as part of the Human Resources for Health project to increase post graduate medical education capacity
