My research focuses on examining and building upon the evidence surrounding obstetric intervention. Many protocols, procedures, and technologies have arisen within the realm of labor and birth that have not been subjected to rigorous study or the studies that have been done are small or inconsistent. By using the formal methods of systematic review and meta-analysis, more clarity can be obtained.
When evidence is lacking, appropriate studies can be designed to yield clinically relevant results. In this manner, my current research has included examining the evidence supporting the 2002 CDC protocol for prevention of intrapartum transmission of group B streptococcus to the newborn. From this systematic review, a prospective cohort study has been designed to determine the adequate duration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent vertical GBS transmission.
Other current studies include the use of cerclage to prevent preterm delivery, placental location and intrauterine growth restriction, antepartum serum analyte analysis to predict preterm delivery, and educating women about how to avoid exposure to environmental toxins in pregnancy. Other research interests include the use of episiotomy, epidural analgesia, the role of midwifery in obstetrics, and the increasing use of elective cesarean section.
