Emergency Medicine

Office of Student Research

Dr. Melnick completed his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and his emergency medicine residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Melnick's research focuses on clinical informatics implications in health services research, specifically improving clinical practice using computerized Clinical Decision Support (CDS). Traditional CDS consists of alerts or reminders presented to the clinician regarding patient-specific recommendations. In this capacity, Dr. Melnick is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality with a K08 career development award to pilot a formative process for creating a tool that integrates a patient-centered decision aid and CDS at the bedside for the management of minor head injury in the ED. This project will shift paradigms for CDS and the ED patient encounter by bringing CDS to the point-of-care for shared use by the patient and provider. The long term goal of Dr. Melnick's research program is to explore strategies to improve the electronic health record interface to bring the physician back to the bedside with tools that improve the value of care by better management of uncertainty.
