Research Summary

Dr. Adhvaryu's research focuses on aspects of health and development economics. He is particularly interested in understanding and alleviating barriers to the adoption of beneficial health technologies and health behaviors in developing countries. His research in this area has to date focused on three topics, all of which center around the analysis of household survey data from Tanzania:

  1. How misdiagnosis affects the way people learn about and adopt a new and effective malaria therapy;
  2. Estimating the effects of better healthcare for the acutely ill on health, schooling and labor outcomes; and
  3. How early-life health "endowments" affect resource and time allocations within the household.

In recent work, he has examined the impact of the franchise health clinic model on access to vaccinations and essential medicines for children in Kenya, and studied how households change resource allocations to children in response to agricultural commodity price shocks.
