Dr. Saravia is the scientific director and research leader for leishmaniasis at the Centro International de Entrenamiento e Investigations Médicas (CIDEIM).
Her career in research on tropical infectious diseases has focused on host-pathogen relationship at several levels: cellular, individual and population. Although her multidisciplinary research has included a range of communicable diseases, such as trypanosomiasis americana, malaria, amebiasis, tuberculosis, leprosy, sporotrichosis and preventable infections, the primary focus of research work has been on leishmaniosis.
Current research aims to mobilize the immune response as a therapeutic strategy, to understand the role of humans in the domestic transmission of cutaneous leishmaniosis, to identify host factors that contribute to therapeutic failure and to identify more effective treatments, including local interventions.
As Scientific Director of CIDEIM, she develops interagency training initiatives, leveraging international partnerships, local capacity and informational technologies.
