The new intern "To Do" list is below.  Please read each section and follow the instructions.  Pay particular attention to dates and who should receive the information requested. 

You are strongly encouraged to respond promptly to any correspondence you receive from the Housestaff Office, from your Program's Administrator/Coordinator (Nancy DiLella) or from our Registrar (imrp.registrar@yale.edu).  In the coming weeks/months you will receive requests for various documentation, a packet of documents from the Housestaff Office you must complete and return promptly, an email with instructions to complete mandatory web-based training (Red Carpet Portal), that all MUST be completed and returned before June 12th OR by the date provided in the correspondence.  Please read all communication you receive carefully and respond.

1) Due by Monday, March 23rd by 4:00PM (EST)... Acceptance Statement for NRMP Matched Position

You received a "Welcome" email sent to you by your residency program on Friday, March 20th, asking you to acknowledge acceptance of your matched intern position with your Yale residency program by sending an email to imrp.registrar@yale.edu (IM Registrar) no later than Monday, March 23, 2015 by 4:00PM (EST).  Please use the appropriate residency program text below in your email.

2) Due by Monday, March 23rd by 4:00PM (EST)... Matched Intern Survey

Your residency programs have approximately 10 questions for you that we need you to answer for us (e.g. Are you away this Spring when you'll be out of contact?, your preferred contact information, etc.)  Watch for an email the afternoon of Friday, March 20th from imrp.registrar@yale.edu (IM Registrar) containing a link to the Matched Intern Survey.  Please complete the survey no later than March 23rd, by 4:00PM (EST).

3) Due by March 31, 2015... VA Paperwork

Open each of the 4 hyperlinks below to complete your VA paperwork (forms in every section).  By March 31st, either MAIL the original copies (see address below) or email a PDF with all your VA paperwork to our IM Registrar. Our IM Registrar will email you when your VA paperwork is received.

4) Due by June 1, 2015... Y-NHH Web-based Mandatory Training (Red Carpet Portal)

Every new intern will receive an automated email in early May 2015 (exact date unknown) from Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH) with information about the "Red Carpet Portal".  The "Red Carpet Portal" is your access to the web-based Y-NHH Mandatory Training (see instructions below).  Please watch your e-mail and your junk e-mail for this important message.

  • Complete all web-based training in the Red Carpet Portal.
  • Your login instructions will be included in the email you are sent.
  • Interns who do not complete the web-based Y-NHH Mandatory Training by June 1, 2015 will be unable to participate in intern orientation.
  • Please call the Y-NHH Housestaff Office at (203) 688-2259 if you have any questions or concerns.

5) Due by June 1, 2015... Y-NHH Housestaff Office Paperwork

In early May the Yale-New Haven Hospital House Staff Office (Y-NHH HSO) will MAIL every new intern a packet of paperwork to complete and mail back to the Y-NHH Housestaff Office to be received no later than June 1, 2015.

  • Follow the instructions provided inside the packet you receive.
  • Complete all documents as soon as possible.
  • Return all documents in the packet to the Y-NHH Housestaff Office by the date provided in the packet instructions.
  • Interns who do not return all their paperwork to the Y-NHH Housestaff Office will not be able to participate in any intern orientation activities beginning June 12, 2015.
  • Please call the Y-NHH Housestaff Office at (203) 688-2259 if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Y-NHH paperwork.

6) Due by April 10, 2015... JPEG Photo for your Yale University ID

Your program's administrator/coordinator is able to have your Yale University ID ready for you when you arrive for intern orientation in June.  The Yale ID Center photograph requirements are the same as the US Passport photo requirements.  Make sure the photo that you send applies to these requirements.  Send your photo to your Yale program administrator/coordinator no later than April 10, 2015.  If you don't send your photo, your program's administrator/coordinator will schedule an appointment for you with the Yale ID Center during your intern orientation.  You'll want a Yale University ID for access to Yale shuttles, Yale buildings on the Medical School Campus, and access to other Yale Services.

7) Due by Friday, June 12th... Medical School Diploma

Please email a PDF copy* of your Medical School Diploma to our IM Registrar no later than Friday, June 12, 2015.

  • If you will not receive your Medical School Diploma by June 12th, obtain a letter (on the school's official letterhead) from your Medical School Registrar's Office that indicates successful completion of your Medical School degree(s).  The letter from your Medical School Registrar's Office (on school letterhead) may be emailed to our IM Registrar by Friday, June 12th.
  • Please Note:  You will be asked by the Y-NHH Housestaff Office to provide another copy of your Medical School Diploma to their office.

* A jpeg copy of your Medical School Diploma may be forwarded to our IM Registrar, but only if it is saved with high-resolution and the entire face of the diploma is shown.

8) Due May 11, 2015...Elective Schedule Requests

Elective Schedule Request ...to prioritize your elective choices.  On May 4th interns will receive an email with a hyperlink, your login and password, instructions and the date you need to submit your elective choices (10 of them) by May 11, 2015 (1 week).  The Elective Schedule Request will allow you to choose your elective rotation preferences from a descriptive list of electives provided and prioritize the electives you choose in order of preference.  Please contact Barbara Wanciak if you have any questions or concerns about the elective schedule request. Please NOTE:  Yale Combined Medicine-Pediatric Interns are not scheduled for any elective rotations during their first year of training.  As a result, Med-Peds interns won't receive an elective schedule request from Medicine this Spring.

Orientation

The Yale Department of Internal Medicine-Education, Intern Orientation for the Yale Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program interns begins on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. at the The Anlyan Center (TAC) Auditorium, 300 Cedar Street (first floor), New Haven, CT (corner of Cedar Street and Congress Avenue).

  • Participation in daily Intern Orientation Activities from June 12 to June 20 (all days) is mandatory Contact Mary Sarah Thanas at marysarah.thanas@yale.edu with any concerns or questions.
  • Your Orientation Schedule will be provided to you on the first day of intern orientation (June 12th) when you register that morning.

Will I have time off during intern orientation?

The first Sunday (June 14) of intern orientation is a day off for you to get settled in, become familiar with New Haven if you're new to the area or just relax!  Although orientation is quite full with training sessions and mandatory activities, there are also social events and down time built into the schedule.  Spouses, significant other and children are invited to all orientation social events.

Who do I contact if I am late or cannot attend an intern orientation session?

All intern orientation activities are either mandated by Yale-New Haven Hospital or by the Yale Department of Internal Medicine.  It is imperative that you attend every session for which you are scheduled.  In the event of an unforeseen emergency or illness, please contact Mary Sarah Thanas at marysarah.thanas@yale.edu or 203-785-7941, and/or your Chiefs (see "Chiefs & Faculty" tab for email).

What is the AY2015-2016 Salary for PGY-1 Interns?

The AY2015-2016 Salary for all PGY-1 Interns is $60,900.

When will I receive my first paycheck?

Provided that all required Y-NHH paperwork for the intern is received by the Y-NHH Housestaff Office BEFORE the first day of intern orientation on June 12th, and provided that all required web-based mandatory training is completed by the intern before orientation, the first intern paycheck (paper check) will be distributed to the intern by their residency program's administrator (Mary Sarah Thanas) on June 18th, 2015 (2 days pay if you began on June 12th).  The second paycheck will be distributed on July 2, 2015 (2 weeks pay if you began on June 12th).  Mary Sarah will notify new interns when they may pick up their first paycheck from her.

Intern employment/pay begins on the first day the resident participates in orientation.

Who do I contact for a letter of employment?

Please contact our IM Registrar at imrp.registrar@yale.edu if you need a letter of employment for an apartment rental, home purchase, etc.

When will our Medicine rotation schedules be finalized?

Medicine Rotation Schedules will not be finalized until June by the YPC/MP Chiefs.  See "Schedule Requests" tab.   You will be notified by the both the Medicine and the Pediatric Chiefs when your schedules are finalized.

When do Intern rotations begin?

Your Combined Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program Administrator, Mary Sarah Thanas will communicate with all 4 new Med-Peds interns about whether they will begin their internship with Medicine or with Pediatrics. 

The two interns scheduled to begin their internship with Medicine during Block 1 on a inpatient service/floor rotation will start on SUNDAY morning, June 21, 2015 with pre-rounds.  If you're scheduled for an ambulatory rotation, you'll begin on Monday, June 22, 2015.

The two interns scheduled to begin their internship year with Pediatrics start on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2015.

Do I need to obtain an ACLS certification before I arrive for orientation in June?

You do not need to obtain your ACLS certification before you arrive.  An ACLS course will be provided for during orientation week, free of charge to you.

Do I need to attend the ACLS course if I am already ACLS certified?

If your ACLS certification was obtained within 2 months of your start date at YNHH (June 12th), you do NOT need to repeat the course.  HOWEVER, you DO need to report to the scheduled ACLS class during the intern orientation so that the instructor can document your certification and excuse you from the course and exam. IF your ACLS certification was obtained MORE than two months prior to your start date at YNHH (June 12th), you MUST report the course during our intern orientation.

Combined Medicine/Pediatrics Program Interns will receive 2 schedule requests this Spring:  1 from Medicine and 1 from Pediatrics.

Medicine - Intern Schedule Request ...includes preferences for vacation when you're on Medicine.  Your AY2015-16 YPC/MP Chiefs will communicate with you this Spring regarding when to expect their schedule request.

Pediatrics - Intern Schedule Request ...The AY2015-16 Pediatric Chiefs will communicate with you this Spring regarding when to expect their schedule request.
