Research Summary

Dr. Van Ness' research work addresses the statistical challenges arising in clinical research with older populations, e.g., evaluating instrument reliability, designing small sample studies, analyzing multicomponent interventions, and handling missing data. A special research interest involves formulating ways to integrate qualitative and quantitative data using mixed methods.

Extensive Research Description

Dr. Van Ness is a senior research scientist in the Geriatrics Section of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Yale School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Biostatistics Core of the Yale Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and the associated Program on Aging.  He specializes in the analysis of categorical and longitudinal data.  His research work addresses the statistical challenges arising in basic aging research and clinical research with older study samples, e.g., evaluating instrument reliability, designing small sample studies, analyzing multicomponent interventions, and handling missing data. A special research interest concerns ways to integrate qualitative and quantitative analytical methods; his most recent methodological publication proposes novel study designs and analytical plans for small sample trials (including, for example, n-of-1 trials). He is currently engaged with colleagues in developing a subdiscipline called “Gerontologic Biostatistics” within the American Statistical Association, the Gerontological Society of America, and elsewhere. This subdiscipline seeks to promote the training of biostatisticians for conducting collaborative clinical research with geriatricians and gerontologists and to provide the intellectual basis for the development of new statistical methodologies.
